Roanoke Valley Amateur Radio Club
“In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia”
The Roanoke Valley Amateur Radio Club (RVARC) is a non-profit, Special Service Club dedicated to the advancement and enjoyment of amateur radio. The club has been serving Southwestern Virginia since 1932 and now has over 200 members.
The club maintains two repeaters on Poor Mountain, 146.985 Mhz and 442.5 Mhz, that have emergency power backup. Through these repeaters, the club provides important communication services during emergencies, such as the Flood of 1985. Members are encouraged to join and support the local Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) organization. In addition, communications are provided for local events such as “WalkAmerica,” the Salem Christmas Parade, and the Special Olympics.
One of the major club activities is the annual Hamfest and Computer Show. Included at this large show are: new and used equipment dealers, seminars given by ARRL, MARS, and others, and upgrade licensing exams. Another major annual club activity is Field Day weekend in June. Amateur radio operators throughout the country spend this weekend contacting as many other Hams as possible in 24 hours. This is an excellent opportunity for the general public to observe the Hams in action.
Along with membership you receive a subscription to our monthly publication, the “W4CA Log.” The “W4CA Log” articles are interesting and educational with many historical facts about the background of amateur radio. All interested people are encouraged to submit articles for the Log.
The club also sponsors the W4CA Net every Wednesday at 8:00 PM on 146.985 Mhz. At this time, Hams discuss local hamfests, upgrade sessions, and the programs for club meetings. The club meets on the second and fourth Friday of every month at 8:00 PM at the Red Cross building downtown. All are welcome.
In addition to the above activities, there is an annual Christmas Party in December and annual picnic in August.
